Road
Cycling
The
Col de l'Iseran - one of the great alpine climbs is right on our
doorstep. From
Bourg St Maurice, the Col de l'Iseran is the longest climb in France
at 47.5 kms. High above Val d'Isere ski resort the summit is also
one of the highest roads in Europe at 2,770 metres.
Tignes
Les Brevieres lies enroute to the Col from
Bourg St Maurice. Val D'Isere is approximately 8km up the valley
with a climb of 300m. From there it is 17km to the Col and a vertical
climb of almost 1,000m to 2,770m.
The
route first appeared in the Tour de France in 1938. It has only
appeared a few times in the Tour and not at all between 1963 and
1992. In 1996, the riders had to cross in cars as snow made the
route unrideable. Last summer saw the Tour return and although the
Tour was surrounded by controversy the Tignes stage was a great
success.
