Tignes
- An Alpine Summer Playground
Over recent years, investment and development has seen Tignes transformed
into a natural playground, set amongst some of the highest and most
stunning peaks in Europe. Each year the local authorities are placing
more and more focus into making Tignes a summer destination. Tignes
now offers more sporting activity in the summer than any other resort
in France.
Whether
you are interested in skiing, golf, mountain biking, quad biking,
paragliding, hiking, canyoning, skateboarding or just want to relax
in the pool you will have no trouble keeping yourself amused in Tignes
in summer! |

Tignes
Les Brevieres
Brevieres is a great place
to have as your base during a summer holiday in the Alps and, being
at 1,550m, it is quite a bit warmer than the other villages of Tignes
at 2,100m. There are also some fantastic walks on your doorstep both
rising high into the Vanoise National Parc up to the Sassieres Glacier
or a more gentle walks to La Gurraz and Savinaz. |
|
|
|
The
village also feels more relaxed and peaceful than the other parts
of Tignes and has all the amenities you'll need such as shops, bars,
restaurants and cash machine.
Activities located in the village of Tignes Les Brevieres include
tennis, go-karting, 4x4 driving, adventure rope course, boules. There
are also some great downhill mountain bike trails back to the village.
A short 10 minute drive up the summer road takes you to Tignes Le
Lac where all the other activities are available (see Skiing;
Mountain
Biking & Cycling and Activity
Holidays sections). |

Vanoise
National Park
Tignes
Les Brevieres lies within the "zone peripherique" area of
the Vanoise National Park, the first National Park to be established
in France. It
was the disappearance of the alpine ibex from the Vanoise mountain
massif that led to the creation of the park July 6, 1963. The ibex
was still widespread in the 16th century, but it was soon wiped out
when guns were used for hunting. Only around a hundred individuals
remained in the Gran Paradiso mountains, in Italy, when hunting of
this animal was banned in 1823. |
|
King
Victor Emmanuel II created the Gran Paradiso royal reserve in 1856;
it was enlarged in 1922 and made into a national park.
In France, the creation
of a national reserve in the Vanoise mountains was being considered
from 1943 and, after
numerous hesitations concerning the surface area to be protected,
the project was finally planned with two zones, one central, the other
peripheral.
The ibex was at last permanently protected by the Vanoise National
Park. It has a common border with the Italian Gran Paradiso National
Park. Twinned since 1972, together they cover 1250 sq km and constitute
the largest protected site in Western Europe.
It is one of the true wildernesses of the Alpine regions and provides
the ultimate experience for high mountain hiking and touring. Private
guides can be hired by the day or for longer periods to ensure you
get the most from this unique area (see Hiking
in the Activity Holiday section).
