Travel
- advice on the best options to get out to the Alps
There are a growing number
of cost effective ways to get out to the Alps. Increasingly low cost
airlines are now operating from regional UK airports to a number of
French / Swiss airports. Alternatively, taking the train gets you
from the heart of London to within a 30 minute taxi ride from our
Chalet and for families in particular this can be a much more relaxed
option.
However,
in the summer, to maximise flexibility in resort, we recommend hiring
a car (or self drive) as there are many areas to visit which are
not accessible by public transport.

Flights
You
can fly from most UK airports to Geneva or Lyon, from where it is
about a two and a half hour drive to Tignes Les Brévières.
Ryanair have also recently launched a service to Grenoble which
is even closer to the resort. Listed below are those airlines that
fly from various airports in the UK, where they can get you to,
and links to their online booking pages.
Flights with airlines such as Easyjet can cost as little as £59
pp return. Easyjet also now fly to Geneva from Bristol, Newcastle
and Nottingham.

Train
Travel
to the Alps by train has become increasingly popular since the inauguration
of a weekly, direct service to the French Alps from London St Pancras
and Ashford International. It proved so popular that Eurostar introduced
an additional weekly service in the shape of an overnight Ski Train
- allowing travellers to extend the standard six-day holiday by
two days to enjoy the piste. The service runs to Bourg St Maurice
from which it is a 30 minute bus or taxi ride both available on
arrival at the train station. There is a choice of three different
rail options:
Option 1
Direct Service (no changes required) - Daytime Eurostar
www.eurostar.com
Departs London St Pancras Saturday morning (approx 10:00) with a
journey time of 7 hours 20 minutes. The return service leaves Bourg
at approximately 10:00 on Saturday and arrives back at London Waterloo
at about 16:00. The cost is around £270 return.
Option 3
Direct Service (no changes required) - Overnight Eurostar
www.eurostar.com
Departs London St Pancras on Friday evening (approx 20:30) with
a journey time of 9 hours arriving on Saturday morning at around
06:30. Travel is in standard Eurostar carriages. Arrival in the
resort can be from 07:00 if not earlier. Clients will depart resort
late evening on Saturday and catch the 22:00 departure from Bourg
St Maurice, arriving back in London at 08:15 on Sunday morning.
The cost is around £270 return.
Option 2
Eurostar via Paris or Lille
www.raileurope.co.uk
Leave London St Pancras on Friday afternoon (approx 17:30), on the
Eurostar to Paris Gare Du Nord where you connect with the overnight
sleeper train to Bourg St Maurice, arriving at 08:45 on Saturday
morning. On the overnight trains, travel is in a couchette compartment.
These sleep six people and are equipped with pillows, blankets and
sheets. Departure will be the following Saturday evening at around
19:15, returning to London St Pancras at 09:30 on Sunday morning.
The cost is around £250 return.

Self
Drive
Since
the advent of the Channel Tunnel and the tremendous improvements made
to the motorway networks in northern France and the Alps have made
life much, much easier for the growing number who decide to drive.
You can now get to Les Brévières easily in one day.
The advantages of driving? It can be less hassle, it gives you tremendous
freedom once you're in the Alps, and it can save money. Having a car
offers the opportunity to sample other resorts in the area or further
afield. From Les Brévières you can easily reach Ste
Foy, La Rosiere, Les Arcs, La Plagne and the Three Valleys, where
a day's skiing is included in your Espace Killy ski pass.
Travel time:
The journey time can be surprisingly short. From Calais, for example,
you can cover the 900km (560 miles) to Tignes in just eight hours
plus stops - all but the final few miles is on motorways.
The costs:
The cost of driving depends, of course, on how many passengers
you cram into your car. You'll pay from around £130 return
to take your car with one passenger on a short channel crossing.
Allow around £200 for petrol, depending on fuel consumption.
Don't forget French motorway tolls - the trip from Calais to Albertville
and back will cost around £100.
The options for crossing the channel are:
Cross the Channel early on a Friday morning and return nine days
later on the Sunday - giving you both Saturdays in resort. After
a full day on the final Saturday, driving towards the Channel for
a few hours before stopping for the night means you won't find Sunday's
journey too demanding.

Airport Transfers
Car
Hire
This can be a reasonable option, especially if you can fill the
car. All airports have car hire desks, as does Bourg St Maurice,
if you want to make it a one way journey. You should always book
in advance, and specify if you need snow chains and/or a ski rack.
Directions to the chalet in Tignes Les Brevieres can be found below.
Avis
Hertz Limited
Europcar
IMPORTANT:
Please note that the Col Du Petit St. Bernard and the Col De L'Iseran
are OPEN from early June to the end of October - depending on conditions.
Private and Shared Taxis
There are several private companies that specialise in taxi and
minibus transfers from Geneva or Lyon airport to the chalet.
One
of the best is the Airport Transfer Service company - they offer
private or shared transfers and will pick up from any airport serving
the resort (Lyon, Geneva, Grenoble) and drop off at the chalet.
A shared taxi costs about under 80 Euro each way (about the same
price as sharing the cost of hiring a car for a week between 4 people).
You can book online at www.a-t-s.net
Please
email us at SkiBrev for details of other taxi companies (chris@skibrev.com).

Chalet La Sache
is located approximately 300 from the ski lifts on the left side as
you enter the village. Take the (D902) from Bourg St. Maurice towards
Tignes / Val D'Isere, then take the turning on the right to Tignes
Les Brevieres (if you come to a dam you've gone too far), after about
half a mile take the road on the left opposite the first shop (TABAC),
go around one hairpin on this road and continue up the hill - Chalet
La Sache is the last chalet on the left just before the next hairpin. |

General
Route Advice
two
main options exist, either follow the motorway via Chambery or take
the N90 road via Annecy to Albertville. We would recommend the motorway
as the N-road can get very blocked with traffic.
IMPORTANT: Please note that the Col Du Petit St. Bernard and the Col
De L'Iseran are OPEN from early June to the end of October - depending
on conditions. |
